He's Back

Keith Nunes

He's been speaking drunken gibberish
since the cat crossed the moon on
the fence passed the orchard trees

When the movie finished he spread
the bed; climbed inside and stayed
there for a week and seven days

There was talk in the office but
the boss just listed him as uncaring

Aftermath standing beside him,
he climbed into a car that looked German
and crossed the leaky border

On the Monday he was back at the desk
that supported his habit

There were distant days until Friday when
he boiled organs and shouldered the sawn-off shotgun

I defend him against claims of
irresponsibility but really
I just envy him

His family put up a stone tablet
One of his girls put down some flowers
All seems perfectly reasonable

And then he comes back
