Piwhane - Spirits Bay 1988

2.

On Maungapika hill there is a
Pohutukawa tree resembling two
lovers embracing, over head clouds
roll away with the ocean
In the distance is the place of farewell
covered in red saliva
Further on is unknown grief
Stones that smile at the sun
Angels that slip blue cellotape
across the black universe
Horses that live in mist
Burial caves that cast no misfortune
And watching where the spirits walk to I keep
my mouth shut least my tongue burns
