there are small melodic steps
we take towards each other when
a leaf falls in the heart of the bush

for we are tuned to hear the slightest
murmur of free-falling objects in flight

the incremental shifts of voice and rhythm
opening worlds with ancient chants

the variation of our trembling breath
as we lap each other like sea urchins
sucking greedily on brittle stars
