Some afternoon
half a million years ago
how close did we come
before we first gave you a name
as you burned across the savannah
with your roll of smoke
and voice like thunder.
Started by lightning
or the sheer heat of summer
beating on the Earth's drum,
who did we ask for your power,
and how long did it take us to learn?

Apollo god of light
Christ god of healing
still we come with our bowl
asking for blessings
as the hard dance wears us down.
