As if & if only

Sonja Yelich

They were afraid of falling
& walked from the plane quickly
my father is a mechanic of Jeeps & fridges
& my mother is lost for words.

          *

They take their ears to the tv at 6.
The smallish box filled with accidents
& people lying around in the state
they were found.

          *

My mother is working selling sewing
& at night sauce to Plimmerton in
snaplock bags. Today she is the sewer
of lupin for the garden.

          *

Our heart is not in it my father said
To the Jeep owner. We are living off
The garden. We have nothing to slaughter
& we do not like flying.

          *

My mother says people disappear
Into thin air everyday & you hear about them
for weeks after in the paper. As if & if only
they will come back.

          *

they are meagre & weak
there are breaks to take &
jeeps to fix. There are planes to fall.
For sure they will fall.
