The Crumb of Lamington History

Vivienne Plumb

Every weekend Mr Jim Tinkle and his wife, Pearl Tinkle, (nee Bundle), pack up their van with boxes of plants which they take to sell at the local market. Pearl says they enjoy the atmosphere. She cannot remember all the names of the many plants they sell, but I know they all have flowers, says Pearl. Some Fridays if she feels like it she will make lamingtons to sell. She is good at making these. Pearl knows more about lamingtons than plants. She says that everyone thinks that lamington cakes were named after Lord Lamington, but they were really named for a man, Sid Lamington, who broke a world record. He ran from Sydney to Perth carrying a dog. No mean feat, says Pearl. That deserves a cake and all.
