Karekare

the dunes are green with marram
and pale with spinifex
one nudges me

tracks everywhere
rusted studs below the cliffs
buggy lines foot traffic

wasps and wasp impersonators
hover over pohutukawa
plump with rain

there has been a drought
days above rain bearing clouds
long before full dams

the breeze changes
and the spinifex returns
wheeling all the time

lines on the cliff come
into focus fine and plump
roots responsible

my tea has cooled
and reached the height
of sand

a spinifex sneaks by
the corner of my eye
the front of my eye

when tilted upwards
receives the beautiful beach
below the milky sky
